Energy Technology Centre Sustainable Refurbishment

The £1M sustainable refurbishment of the Energy Technology Centre is now underway.

New Park, working in conjunction with the Sustainable Energy Technology and Innovation Centre Ltd, have now formally commenced the main contract works.

The upgrade will utilise innovative materials and technologies to create an exemplar 'eco-efficient pilot building' which will both use and help to develop new renewable energy technologies. The overall low carbon refurbishment will deliver passive standard office accommodation within the building and will result in significant improvements to standards elsewhere in the building, in the laboratories and engineering test bays.

Within the overall refurbishment it is proposed to employ a range of innovative technologies including thermal management, wind and photovoltaic electricity supply, heat recovery from engineering test rigs and heating steam supplied from a novel multi-fuel burner.

The finished building will provide an excellent, low carbon, environment for the future testing of innovative renewable energy technologies.

This investment of £1M is partially funded by the INTERREG IVB 'REGAIN' Project (www.programme-regain.eu) which sees the Energy Technology Centre working in partnership with European Partners from Belgium, France, Italy and Wales sharing knowledge and the active skills transfer of sustainable building techniques.

New Park welcomes sfG Software to the Green House

Although only trading since February 2010 sfG Software has already built an impressive client list locally, including local Highland businesses such as Jacobite Cruises and Synergie Scotland. The initials 'sfG' stand for "small, friendly Giant", and this sums up the business's values. They provide a 'giant' service to their customers while delivering all the benefits you would expect from a 'small and friendly' company.

sfG Software's main focus at the moment is delivering IT Support to businesses in the Highlands. They have built a team of highly experienced programmers and engineers, all recruited from the Highlands, so do not rely on any one individual who can leave a business exposed when on holiday or off sick. Between them, sfG's IT support engineers have decades of experience of managing IT networks.

Unlike many IT support companies, they provide the giant 'extras' like out of hours support and service level agreements tailored precisely to the customer's needs. They have also pioneered the concept of giving money back to their customers if it turns out they don't need as much support as first thought.

New Park wishes sfG Software every success and looks forward to working closely with them as they continue to grow and develop their business from their new home in the Green House.

New Park to Sponsor Employee on Volunteering Expedition

New Park has agreed to help sponsor employee Jonathan Mackenzie who is taking part in a volunteering expedition to a remote Fijian Island for the next three months with Leeds based organisation, Think Pacific.

Jonathan will spend his time living, working, teaching and coaching in a small Fijian village called Wawa on Moturiki Island. As part of a team of 11 volunteers he will help undertake community projects such as the construction of a village hall, plumbing in a fresh water supply, rugby coaching and also teaching in the local island school and kindergarten. During his time at Wawa Jonathan will live with a local family embracing and learning about the local culture.

It is a great opportunity for Jonathan to use skills he has gained at University and while working with New Park to help others and make a difference to the local people’s day-to-day lives.

Jonathan’s progress in Fiji can be followed through the Think Pacific website.

CSC expanding at Forss

CSC’S new Centre of Excellence for the civil nuclear industry at Forss Business and Technology Park isn’t just home to a dedicated team of IT specialists who have transitioned from Dounreay. With government funding now in place, the headcount is expanding and by strengthening links with local colleges, it acts as a showcase to attract the talent of tomorrow.

"The best thing since sliced bread," is how Alan Sinclair, CSC’s Centre Manager at Forss, describes the decision by the Nuclear Decommissioning Agency (NDA) to outsource IT operations at Dounreay. He should know: Alan was IT Manager at Dounreay for many years prior to the outsourcing to CSC and knew what an important economic lifeline it would be. Once the transition and move down the road to Forss was completed, socio economic priorities were top of the agenda. "Like NDA, we are strongly committed to supporting the local community and economy,” said David Jones, Account Director, CSC.

As well as Dounreay Site Restoration Limited, we support a number of other major CSC clients from Forss. "In fact," said David, "in terms of customer service the Forss team is one of the best performers in CSC which is a tremendous credit to the skills and dedication of our people. This attracts new business to CSC’s global portfolio which, in turn, creates further job opportunities here."

Alan hopes this success will enable us to recruit tomorrow’s employees from the local student base.

Neil Robertson, New Park’s Director based at Forss said “ We have seen CSC grow at Forss and the high quality office accommodation and IT connectivity at the site allow them the scope to realise their full potential. ”
